Saint Martin’s Ministries Announces Winners of 2nd Annual 5K to Chase Off Poverty


For the second year Mason Ratcliff took first place in the Youth category in Saint Martin’s Ministries 5K to Chase Off Poverty (COP). Mason is 7 years old and may have a great future as a runner. First place men’s was won by Steven Wheeler with a time of 19:04, beating last year’s top male, Trey Hill, by more than a minute. Lacy Hesson took first place in the women’s group. Claire Vornbrock was the top runner in the Fun run.

Saint Martin’s Ministries congratulations these runners and thanks all who supported COP. It is a great run for kids and families. The entire course is on private property/closed roads. The event also includes music, food, and kids activities. The Thrift store at Saint Martin’s Barn is open for shopping.
A major sponsor for this year’s COP was Caroline County Department of Health’s Pregnancy and Tobacco Cessation Help program (PATCH). Heather Reed from the Health Department was on site providing information on smoking cessation, the effects of second hand smoke and ways to stop smoking. There were 14 sponsors, and five sponsors also participated as runners in the race — Sue Fleegle from Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral, John Friel from Monoponson Consulting, Cheryl and Trey Hill from Harborview Farms, Lynn Knight from Law Office of Lynn Knight and Jeff Powell from Towers Concrete.
In addition to the PATCH program presenting sponsors were Callahan’s Gas and Appliance of Centreville and Tricycle& Run from Saint Michaels. TriCycle & Run provided race management and KC Darling was the DJ. Other sponsors included Choptank Transport, Doug’s Tire, Law Office of Lynn Knight, Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral, Foster’s Mini Mart, Freestate & Son Insurance, Harborview Farms, Impressive Printing, Monoponson Consulting, Nagel Farm Service, St. Benedict/St. Elizabeth Church and Towers Concrete Products.
